Lucian Freud 1922-

Lucian Freud was born in Berlin, the grandson of Sigmund Freud. Being a Jew he moved to London when Adolf Hitler was appointed Chancellor in 1933.

In 1938 Freud studied at the Central School of Arts in London, and from 1939 to 1942 at the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing in Debham.

Lucian Freud had work published in Horizon magazine in 1939 and 1943. In 1944 his paintings were hung at the Lefevre Gallery. Between 1949 and 1954 he was a visiting tutor at the Slade School of Fine Art, London.

 Lucian Freud

His first retrospective exhibition was held in 1974 at the Hayward Gallery in London. The one at the Tate Gallery in 2002 was a sell-out.

Portraits and nudes are his specialties, often observed in arresting close-up. His early work was meticulously painted, so he has sometimes been described as a realist or rather absurdly as a super-realist. His portraits and nudes make many regard him as the greatest figurative painter of our time.
