Jean-Léon Gérôme 1824 – 1904
Born at Vesoul, A French painter and sculptor in historical Orientalist style.
In 1841 he went to Paris where he studied under Paul Delaroche, and accompanied him to Italy in 1844-1845. On his return he exhibited The Cock-fight, which gained him a third-class medal in the Salon of 1847.
The Virgin with Christ and St John and Anacreon, Bacchus and Cupid took a second-class medal in 1848.
In 1856 he went to Egypt and started many Orientals paintings depicting Arab religion, genre scenes and North African landscapes. Gérôme's best paintings are of Eastern subjects. |
